Phenom ii vs Athlon ii

Phenom and Athlon are the popular processors brought out by AMD. AMD has come out with new versions–Phenom ii and Athlon ii–that are far better than the original ones. There is hardly any difference between the two processors.

Though Athlon II has the same properties as that of Phenom II, it has certain handicaps. These prevent athlon ii from performing at the same level as that phenom ii.

The athlon ii does not have L3 cache and have lower clock speeds, which are the major handicaps. This is one of the main differences that can be seen between the two processors in terms of performance at comparable clock speeds.

In power consumption, phenom ii uses more power than the athlon ii. One of the reasons said for this is the presence of LC 3 cache in phenom ii as the cahche requires power to perform.

Athlon II comes with tri-core designs as it does not include any disabled cores. On the other hand, Phenom II processors come with four cores.

Both the phenom ii and athlon ii now use AM3. But earlier, the athlon ii only used this AM3 but new phenom ii processors come with AM3.

When working in motherboards, athlon ii works with all types. On the other hand, phenom ii does not support all motherboards.

In price comparison, the phenom ii is a bit highly priced than athlon ii.

Some opine that phenom ii is better than athlon ii. But there is only a slight difference between the two and so it is better to but one which meets your needs.
