Difference Between HTS and HCS


“HTS” and “HCS” are both main tools used in the drug designing technology. The differences between them is not so strict.

“HTS” stands for “high throughput screening.” It is a scientific method of experimentation used in the process of the invention of drugs. It uses sensitive detectors, robotics, liquid handling devices, and data processing and control software. With the use of high throughput screening, a researcher can conduct millions of genetic, pharmacological, and chemical tests in a much shorter duration. The use of this technique enables a researcher to quickly identify antibiotics, genes, or active compounds which adapt to a particular bimolecular pathway and understand the role of the interaction of a particular biochemical process in biology.

In this technique, the immortalized cells or cells with a stable rate of mortality are genetically modulated through recombinant engineering to indicate specific target molecules. These targets may be used to test many inhibitors in the high throughput screening assay.

This technique originated about 30 years ago from natural product screening just for pharmaceutical, biological, biotechnological research and development. The basic concept is to achieve a high efficiency by performing very large numbers of biological experiments or tests in parallel using automation techniques.

“HCS” stands for “high content screening.” No doubt this technique shares many core techniques with high throughput screening. The major difference between the two is that HCS gets multiple readouts from cell analysis.

In HCS, live cell imaging is involved. It aims at extracting temporal dynamics and spatial information and, thus, there is a heavy dependence on image analysis. The objective of high content screening is to balance collecting comprehensive information with high efficiency.
