Zoloft vs Celexa

Depression is said to be a state of sadness not in an acute time but in a longer time. Depression is brought about by different factors. A death of a family member, being heartbroken, or even failures in life make people depressed for some time. If this continues for such a long time, it is not already just sadness but rather depression.

Two drugs that aim to secrete happy hormones are Zoloft and Celexa. Let us compare the differences between these two drugs.

The generic name of Zoloft is Sertraline while the generic name of Celexa is Citaprolam. Both Zoloft and Celexa are SSRIs or selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Celexa was created during 1989 by the Lundbeck pharmaceutical company. Zoloft was manufactured earlier during the 1970’s. Pfizer manufactured it under its chemist, Reinhard Sarges.

Zoloft and Celexa are both indicated in depressive and anxiety disorders. Studies show that both are effective in treating major depression in patients. Studies also show that patients taking Celexa had more anti-anxiety effects on the patients. In patients undergoing Celexa treatment, gastrointestinal side effects are more noticeable than those using Zoloft. Those using Celexa also had reported no weight gain and side effects on sex while taking this drug.

There certain conditions in which both drugs cannot be given such as bipolar disorder, those with DM or diabetes mellitus, those with a history of suicide, those who had received ECT, and those with heart and liver disease. In taking Zoloft, one should remember that he or she cannot simultaneously take this drug with MAOIs, anti-cancer drugs, some psychiatric drugs, anticoagulants, pain-relieving drugs, etc. Celexa cannot be taken together with MAOI drugs, phenothiazines, chemo drugs, and tryptophans.

You should also take these drugs with precaution. They should take it with a full glass of water. It can be with or without food. One should also not stop taking this drug immediately. Adverse effects that should be reported when taking both drugs are: allergic reactions, blood in the feces, fainting, vomiting, seizures, hallucinations, and changes in heartbeat pattern which can be faster than the usual. If these didn’t go away, one should contact the doctor immediately.
