Difference Between Gynaecologist and Obstetrician

gynaecologist vs obstetrician

A gynaecologist and an obstetrician are related to women’s health. In some countries, like India, there is hardly any difference between gynaecologist and obstetrician. Let us look at what the two terms refer to.

A gynaecologist is a doctor or physician who looks after all problems related to women. On the other hand, an obstetrician is a doctor or a physician who looks after pregnancy and delivery.

It is the gynaecologist who will test for pregnancy and then if confirmed will send the woman to the obstetrician, who will then take care of pre-natal care, conduct various tests and perform the delivery.

The gynaecologist is the specialist who specialises in women’s reproductive systems, such as ovary, vagina and uterus. On the other hand, an obstetrician does not specialise in the reproductive system but his or her duty comes once the woman is pregnant.

The gynaecologist and obstetrician specialize in different fields. The gynaecologist specializes in mammograms, pap smear, uterine/ vaginal infections, contraception, fertility issues, hysterectomies and tubal ligations. An obstetrician specializes in post-natal care, post-partum care and delivery.

When talking of diseases related to a woman and her reproductive organs, the gynaecologists treat it. Whereas, obstetricians do not deal with diseases. They are just concerned, as said earlier, with pregnancy and delivery and childcare. Moreover, the obstetrician also treats complications related to child birth such as fetal distress, ectopic pregnancy, pre-eclampsia, placental abruption, shoulder dystocia, uterine rupture, sepsis, obstetrical hemorrhage and prolapsed cord.
