Difference Between Preacher and Pastor

preacherPreacher vs Pastor

People of Christian faith are often confused between two of the prominent figures of a congregation ‘“ the pastor and the preacher. Most people use the terms interchangeably, which can be fine for some since some pastors are also preachers. Even church members mistake one with the other and most of the time, they are corrected by the said pastor or preacher.

Preachers, technically, are the ones who proclaim and spread the word of God. They are usually great motivational speakers. Preachers do not necessarily perform pastoral works unless that particular preacher is also a pastor by vocation. However, it is not common for pastors nowadays, to also become preachers of their congregation. Usually, there is someone else given with the duty to preach ‘“ such as  a preacher.

The term pastor is rooted on its meaning or origin as ‘shepherd’. Since shepherd is associated as an overseer of the flock, it is just appropriate that an overseer of a congregation is called a shepherd. Pastors, being shepherds, guide their church members towards salvation. Technically, pastors functions as a physical, spiritual, relational and social administrator of a congregation.

Often, pastors are called elders. They are the local church leaders. They are qualified to give counsel to those in need of spiritual, emotional, and even financial help. They are the authority of the local congregation but shall not exceed outside of it.

In some cases, there is a possibility that a man can serve both functions — being a pastor and a preacher. It is fine but somehow, administering a local congregation is a great deal of work. Preaching is one of the duties that a pastor usually surrenders. Therefore, preachers are often designated to assist in the task of proclaiming the word of God.

1. A preacher has a job that emphasizes more on proclaiming the words of God or the teachings of the Bible and Jesus Christ while a pastor’s job is the oversight of a particular congregation.
2. Pastors can become preachers by means of performing the acts of preaching while preachers can be any member of the church with strong public communication skills.
3. Pastors administer the congregation and its members while preachers are often assistants to pastors to preach the word of God to church members.
4. In terms of prominence, pastors often ranks higher than preachers. However, it should be noted that there can be preacher bishops who are certainly more prominent than pastors.

  1. I don’t care, I’m a muslim

    • If you really do not care why did bother to leave a note?

    • Gerwin, you must be interested in the Lord Jesus Christ, He loves you and he’s aways just a prayer away.

    • why would isis be reading this anyway

    • Brother you should care because Jesus came to seek and save (all) that are lost.
The lost are all, because we were all born into sin and a sinful world and are lost because of it.

That means everyone is under the curse of sin which means death, seperation from God for eternity.

The only way out of this eternal prison is “Jesus Christ”

In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God and the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.

By the Word all things were created, by him and through him and for him, without him nothing was created.

Jesus Christ is the creator of heaven and earth as He spoke creation into existence.

Jesus said I am the way the truth and the life..
Everyone who believes He is the son of God will be saved.

God so loved the world that he sent His only begotten Son, that whoever believes on him will be saved and have eternal life.

God did not send his Son to condem the world but that the world might be saved through him.

He who believes in Him is not condemmed, but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not belived in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

And this is the condemnation that the light (JESUS) has come into the world and men loved darkness rather than the light, because there deeds were evil.

For everyone practicing evil hates the light because the their deeds were evil…

For everyone practising evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed.

“But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they be done in God.

Jesus is the light of this world.

Jesus loves you, He laid his life down so you can have eternal life, is this not love?

We dont deserve it, but because he loves you he has made a way out for us.

It is a free gift, you dont have to earn, you can’t earn it because its a gift, the gift of life, all you can do is recieve it.

      Choose life

    • I pray that one day you will care and know there is only one way to get to Heaven and that is through Jesus. John 3:16 in the Bible

      • Here is the issue with quoting John 3:16, its not regarding Jesus came to offer salvation to all…if that wete the case, then what about all those who died before Jesus died on the cross…they had no offer of salvation. When you follow it through logically to the end you will see the verse is pointing to those who were chosen by God…as we do not choose God…for reference read Romans 3:10-12, no one seeks God….you can’t seek the Lord in the flesh, but only by spirit, when He puts a new spirit in the one He is calling.

        • God gave Abraham a vision of the future. He saw Christ. Your statement about not saving the people who were before Christ is false. When God was talking to Satan shortly after he deceived Eve, God told him he was going to put emnity between her seed and his seed, he was talking about Jesus. God made a provision for every human who has ever lived. When they died, they paid for their sins. The Bible says there will be a ressurection of the righteous and the unrighteous. Every human to ever walk the earth will get a chance to live without Satan’s corruptive influence. Through the blood of Jesus we have been made as if we never sinned at all.

          • Not true, Matthew 1:21…He will save His people from their sins. Not all are given to Christ by the Father. Romans 9 speaks of those fitted for destruction, as in Isaiah as well. You my friend are giving people a false hope that all can be saved when that is not the truth of scripture. Jude speaks of those marked out for destruction. Jesus tells the Pharisee’s they are of the father of lies, the devil, in John’s gospel. Jesus says He chooses, John 15:16. and again Romans 3:12, no one seeks after God, so I must ask, is that no one but you? Are you denying the words of Christ, I know I surely don’t. I didn’t seek God, I had plans to commit suicide and Jesus, sought me out (the providence of God), He left the 99 and brought me to the sheep pen. Notice the parable of the 99, He doesn’t say He turned a goat into a sheep, He saved His lost sheep, they were always a sheep, they were just astray.

My point being, there were those saved in the OT and it was by the redemption of the blood of Christ, but not all were given to the Son by the Father. If you study scripture, you will see the three part ministry of the Godhead, God the Father’s electing grace, God the Son’s redeeming grace and God the Holy Spirit’s regenerating grace. This is plain as day Light in scripture, that is unless you are a natural man as the natural man cannot understand the things of God.

          • Mark, you are correct!

          • I find it odd, statements are made and no biblical scripture to be used to make the case in question. The bible is very clear and if you cannot use scripture to back up scripture them the issue is in the interpretation of the interpreter…as the word of God does not contradict itself.

          • Indeed. It is true that not all are saved.

            Roman’s 9:15 – 16
15 For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

16 So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

            Also, verse 21
Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

We are all born sinners. For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

None of us deserve salvation. It is the free gift of God through Christ.

Only he Holy Spirit can reveal God to those he has called, reveal our sinfulness to us, and, therefore our need for Salvation.

Having said that, we are to preach the gospel to all and pray for the salvation of all. We do not know who the Lord will call, nor who He will save. That is completely up to Him.

  2. Because Muslims are stupid….

  3. Muslims aren’t stupid if you do think that at least keep it to yourself show some respect after all John you’ll be punished

  4. I readed yr article on the pastor and preacher not bad but what is unnoticed is the fact any one with a heart to serve or just a heart can become a pastor through bobble collage I admire there hard work but at the end of the day the spirit gives the gifts the church I see today doesn’t see or have lost touch with how to use the gifts probably until then the kingdom will be only of words and not power

    • Ricky, the bible is clear on the qualifications of a pastor. Tius 1:5-9. 5)For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: 6)if any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. 7)For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; 8)But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; 9)Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers.

  5. Isn’t that the pot calling the kettle black,Giovannis ? You condem John, but your deeds and actions have already done this to you. Muslims and those who reject who Jesus is, will be judged at death by God in his rightous judgement and God will condem their soul to eternal punishment because they rejected his free gift of salvation from sin and death offered by his son Jesus to those who open their hearts and minds and believe in him.

    • Eyes, Ears and Heart…

We don’t open our eyes, God will open the eyes and ears and give us the heart when He see’s fit to and when it is for His purpose….many scriptures tell us this…such as in Deuteronomy.

      Deuteronomy 29:4King James Version (KJV)
4 Yet the Lord hath not given you an heart to perceive, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day.

Some will say this is the Old Testament and this is for the Nation of Israel, to that I will say this…

Hebrews 13:8New American Standard Bible (NASB)
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.

We truly don’t go to God on our own, as Paul teaches in The Book of Romans, no one seeks after God.

      Romans 3:10-19King James Version (KJV)
10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:
11 There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God.
12 They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one.
13 Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips:
14 Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness:
15 Their feet are swift to shed blood:
16 Destruction and misery are in their ways:
17 And the way of peace have they not known:
18 There is no fear of God before their eyes.
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

We are called upon by God to serve His purpose and not our purpose. In the 8th chapter of The Book of Romans Paul says this.

Romans 8:28-33New American Standard Bible (NASB)
28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.
      29 For those whom He foreknew, He also predestined to become conformed to the image of His Son, so that He would be the firstborn among many brethren;
30 and these whom He predestined, He also called; and these whom He called, He also justified; and these whom He justified, He also glorified.
31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?
32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?
      33 Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the one who justifies;

So in verse 28 we see He calls those who love Him and are called according to His purpose…this is talking about those who God foreknew and those who are predestined and that are His elect (chosen)…as the unsaved of the world does not love God because they are His enemy…so the context here is talking about the saved.

Romans 5:10New American Standard Bible (NASB)
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life.

Colossians 1:19-20New American Standard Bible (NASB)
19 For it was the Father’s good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven.

God is the one who calls us and reconciles us through Him, we don’t have a choice in the matter when He calls us. what we do have though is a choice to obey or disobey the Lord.

We must remember the Word of God is written to the saved, His children, we are not all His children as some would suggest. We only become His children when we are called upon and He places His Spirit within us. The Word of God does not make sense to the unsaved, as it says in scripture it is veiled by the god of this world…

2 Corinthians 4:3-10New American Standard Bible (NASB)
3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing, 4 in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God. 5 For we do not preach ourselves but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your bond-servants for Jesus’ sake. 6 For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.
7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power will be of God and not from ourselves; 8 we are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not despairing; 9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; 10 always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.

Verse 7 says it all…children of God are nothing more then an earthen vessel that holds the greatest treasure of all…the Spirit of God.

We must let go of our pride and believe what the Bible teaches us. I could go as far as this…you are drawing a line in the sand and God made the stick and He also made the sand…and He also made us, He is the Creator and we are the Creation and who are we to look at God and ask why He does what He does…does He not make one vessel for honor and one for dis honor

Romans 9:20-21New American Standard Bible (NASB)
20 On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? 21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?

God makes us they He made us, we don’t have any right to question Him. Instead lets glorify His and and give Him praise and thank Him for all He does for us. All glory be to God the Father and may we glorify Him through His Son, Christ Jesus.

  6. I think I am enjoying all the write up. please, I need more of these it very interesting. thank you. Michael

  7. I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one cometh to the Father
    But through me says

    • And we may add to this.

      John 6:44
No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up on the last day.

      John 6:65
And He was saying, “For this reason I have said to you, that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted him from the Father.”

In other words, it’s all an act of God and His grace to grant and draw those whom the Lord chose to become children of the most High!

      God be glorified!

      In grace,

  8. I love to be a remarkable Christian

  9. So the bible says that a bishop is to be a man of one wife, but does that mean a pastor or preacher or both???
