Difference Between Centerfire and Rimfire

Centerfire vs Rimfire

Centerfire and rimfire are cartridges used in guns.

The centerfire and rimfire cartridges show differences in many aspects, such as, their design, firing range, and power.

When comparing the two, rimfire was the first cartridge that came to be used. The rimfire cartridge has a design with the priming compound only on the rim and the firing pin. In the case of centerfire, the cartridge has the priming compound in the center of the shell base. The centerfire are mostly cylindrical with rounded tips.

When looking at the cost of the two cartridges, rimfire are inexpensive. Moreover, rimfire cartridges are more produced than the centerfire cartridges.

As the centerfire cartridge has the priming compound in the center, it can be kicked out and replaced during the reloading process. But the reloading process is not available with rimfire cartridges.

Another difference that can be seen is that the centerfire cartridges are more powerful than rimfire cartridges. The centerfire cartridges also have a greater range and perform better than the rimfire.

Unlike the hard material used in making the centerfire, the rimfire are made from soft brass. This means that the rimfire cartridges cannot withstand high pressure and are crushed as soon as they are fired. The strong base of centerfire cartridges gives them the ability to withstand high pressure. When the pressure is high, then the bullet will have more energy and higher velocity.

As the centerfire cartridges come with a hard covering and are not damaged easily, they are used more in military operations.
