“XFP” stands for “10 Gigabit Small Form Factor Pluggable” while “SFP” stands for “Small Form-factor Pluggable.”

The appearance is different, and XFP is for 10G application, SFP is for 1.25G application, XFP is an older version.

The SFP+ (Small Form factor Pluggable) module is a variant of the SFP optical transceiver. SFP modules have shipped in volume for years in Gigabit Ethernet and 1-, 2-, and 4-Gigabit Fibre Channel applications. The SFP+ module in Fiberstore form factor is 30% smaller, burns less power, requires fewer components, and is less expensive than the XFP form factor (which itself is significantly smaller and lower power than XAUI-based XENPAK and X2 form factors).
