Communism and dictatorship are very different in all aspects, political as well as economic ideologies.
In communism, the society or the community is on top of everything. But in dictatorship, society or community is only secondary and it is the dictator who governs everything.
Communism regards the society or community as powerful. But in dictatorship, it is the dictator who is the most powerful. Dictatorship is a system in which a single person rules the nation. On the other hand, in communism the power is not vested in a single individual.
In communism, the profit is shared equally in the community. Whereas in dictatorship, the profit is accumulated in only one person. When the society dictates the overall economy in communism, it is the dictator who has the last say in the economics of a nation in dictatorship.
When communism believes in common ownership, dictatorship believes in individual ownership. It is the community that handles the resources or the means of production in Communism. But in dictatorship, the dictator handles the means of production or resources. Communism stands for a free society where every one is equal.
Communism does not believe in private property and the wealth is owned by every person. In dictatorship, it is just the opposite. In communism, every one is equal. But in dictatorship, there are no equals.
Communism does not authorise any person to take any decisions according to their aspirations. On the other hand, a dictator has a free hand in taking any decision.
When communism stands for a stateless or class less society, dictatorship only has its footing only if there is a state.
While communism is strongly based on socialism, dictatorship is based on power.

Are you really so naive that you think that communism is not a dictatorship. I lived under Communism and it is a complete dictatorship of the communist boss and his thugs. You must be joking when you say “In communism, every one is equal. But in dictatorship, there are no equals.”
Russia was a Communist dictatorship, as is Cuba and north Korea. Look at how long the same people rule and then pass the power along to family members just like any other dictator. Their friends and supporters are all rich.

That’s because true communism has never been implemented. “Russian style” communism, “Chinese style” communism”, “Cuban style” communism”, etc. were really just dictatorships with communist trappings. You can thank Joseph Stalin for that.

Marx directly outlines the need for totalitarian dictatorship in Communism. It’s just that the people who still believe in Communism never bother to actually learn about it.

You need to travel. You have no idea how insulting it is to your words. Your president can only rule for 8 years (or 4 if they are voted out in the next cycle). Does that sound like a dictator? Your president earns a set salary (which is very low compared to any corporate CEO). Your presidenst have very, very limited powers to do anything on their own accord.
I’m serious, travel to a place where people literally risk their lives to leave and live with them for awhile and you’ll understand what a dictator is.
Here’s the kicker: the fact that you can walk down the street and tell people all day long that you hate the president…means you live in a free country.

Regardless of how our system is structured, our current president doesn’t play by the rules. He is not classified as a dictator, but he does not act very differently in comparison to the definition of a dictator. And in terms of getting politicians out of the cycle, there are politicians who stay in office for tens of years in America because people aren’t educated enough to evaluate all of their options each year. Finally, we may have the right of “free speech,” but people in our society limit each other on what we can say constantly with false premises. We can’t talk about religion in school, we can’t even voice our opinions without being socially unappealing because some don’t fit the agenda. So, America may be a democratic republic in name, but it is barely true in terms of society and how we let the government be run. And I don’t need to travel to know the communistic state of many countries and how that applies to their lives, thank you very much.

I agree. If you traveled and have the opportunity to actually see how others live in other countries, you would see it is in no way greener on the other side. We Americans take so much for granted. Hence, we have the reputation of being spoiled Americans. I will take our problems vs what I have seen around the globe, any day. Grateful American, pros and cons.

This article is supposed to (though it fails miserably) answer the question people may have about the difference between two different systems of rule. People have this question because countries exist who have regimes that are known by these terms. True communism has never, nor will ever be implemented for an entire country, so we have to go by what is commonly known as communism for the sake of this debate because it’s supposed to be a practical question. This answer fails miserably because it pits one textbook theory version (communism) vs something real world (dictatorships). Apples to oranges.

You are saying that there is no such thing as a country run by a dictator and no countries run by a communist regime? Both systems make the rules you have to live under. That means they are the same thing in this context.
Of course you can compare the two systems since people right now live under them. They exist.
I don’t care if ‘real’ communism doesn’t exist. There are still regimes where you can’t own land, everybody is ‘equal’ blah blah blah. Pull your head out of your pedantic textbooks and in to the real world.

First of all, both communism and dictatorship are political systems. See socialism for an economic system, and society doesn’t rely on a governmental system. However, it is true that communism isn’t precisely in the same district as a dictatorship, but it’s not a crime to compare the two for the sake of curiosity. I agree with captaindash in this sense; you made a wild accusation based on no information and a horribly worded simile.

Agreed, Bruce (except for the “liberal f” part). Supporters try to hide behind the fact that “real” communism has never been tried. I don’t care what the system is, somebody has to run it and make the final decisions. Marx himself clearly states in his manifesto that violence and and iron fist are fair game. I was surprised when I read that because all I’d heard from communists was that it was all about community and togetherness. I guess they didn’t read the actual text.
Besides, everyone thinks they could do better. So YOU and your closest peers will be the benevolent communist rulers that nobody else in the history of the world has ever been? Right.
Marx today would’ve have been a communist. The world is AWESOME today. Back in Marx’s time I totally understand why he wanted such a system, but today on a minimum wage you can live a life with clean, running water, indoor plumbing, refrigeration, access to medicine, workday limits, access 24/7 to food from all around the world and the internet. Kings of old couldn’t imagine such luxuries.
