Chinese and Mandarin are used interchangeably. Chinese is a term that refers to a common language spoken in China. Mandarin is a form of Chinese language. One cannot come across many differences between Chinese and Mandarin.

When talking about the Chinese language, there is no such language as Chinese. It is the non-Chinese people who refer to all dialects used in China as Chinese, but for the Chinese people, they have different dialects, and the most common one is the Mandarin dialect and the Cantonese.

The spoken Chinese and the written Chinese are different. Though there are many regional Chinese varieties, they are all considered to be a single Chinese language for political and social reasons. Mandarin, Wu, Cantonese, Min Xiang, Hakka and Gan are some of the widely used Chinese languages. The different Chinese languages also differ from one region to another. Mandarin is the most widely used language among the Chinese.

Mandarin is usually referred to as the standard Chinese language. Mandarin is now the most commonly used language in government, education and media. Mandarin is spoken more than the other Chinese languages in the cities. Mandarin is related more to the spoken form, and the written Chinese form is based upon it. In comparison to other Chinese languages, Mandarin has more polysyllabic words. It has also been noted that mandarin has less sounds when compared to other Chinese languages.
