Difference Between Fake News and News Satire

Is this fake news or satire? This is a commonly asked question in response to the news. With the current growth of social media and internet content, we receive more news from the internet as opposed to traditional sources. It would be easy to point out satire or fake news, only if a majority understood the differences between the two. Though easily confused for the other, fake news and satire have differences, as outlined below.


What is Fake News?

These are stories crafted to deceive or misinform the readers and viewers. The profitability of fake news has seen a significant rise in publishing especially on websites and social media channels using reputable organizations and personalities’ information. These can create a lot of confusion and drama and even lead to theft of personal data. It is important to double-check on information received by checking with other reputable sources.


What is Satire?

This is the use of humor in individual or activity commentaries. Satirical commentaries are used to disapprove, exaggerate, attack or criticize something, often which the informer disapproves. Sarcasm and exaggeration are also used to create a humorous tome. Satire is common in journalism and often pokes fun at the news, with an intention of promoting change by attaining higher levels of social criticism. Satire is common in political and current events.

Fake news refers to stories crafted to deceive or misinform the readers or viewers. On the other hand, satire refers to the use of humor in individual or activity commentaries.


While fake news intends to deceive or misinform the readers and viewers, satire intends to disapprove, exaggerate, attack or criticize something.
