Differences Between Seventh-day Adventists and Christians

Seventh-day Adventists vs Christians

Most people think that all Protestant churches are the same but they’re actually not. One particular group that is considered different from other Christian organizations is the Seventh-day Adventist or SDA. Essentially, their teachings are rooted in the works of Jesus as recounted in the Bible, which is the same with all Christian groups, but they have different beliefs and practices.

The most glaring discrepancy between Seventh-day Adventists and other Christian churches is the day they assign for worship. Catholics and other Christian sects use Sunday as day of fellowship while SDA members prefer to hold it on Saturdays. They believe this is the day of the Sabbath or the time when God rested after creating the world and all living creatures.

Other Christian groups use the Bible as their sole reference for their teachings and practices which is different from SDA members who also study the works of one of their founders Ellen G. White. This practice has paved the way for other religious organizations to brand them as a cult which they readily deny. Cults are religious groups, but instead of worshiping a divine Being, they center on their leader’s beliefs and teachings effectively appointing him or her as their own savior.

The SDA also cite their roots as a major difference between themselves and most Christian churches. In general, all Christian groups are regarded as belonging to the Protestant movement which was first established by Martin Luther who sought independence from the Catholic Church. This spawned many groups like: Lutherans, Methodists, and Presbyterians, among many others. In essence, Protestant churches came from Catholicism, but SDAs sprouted out of Protestant beliefs.

There are also major differences in the SDA’s beliefs and that of other Christians’. SDA members don’t believe in the notion that the human soul can live forever contrary to what Christians preach. They also view the concept of salvation differently from other Christians. For them, a person’s life is evaluated by God while he or she is still alive which is in direct contrast to what most Christian teachings say that God will hold judgment upon entry to the gates of Heaven.

Practices of SDA members also differ from other Christians. While Christians discourage members to have vices like drinking and smoking, they allow them nevertheless. For SDAs, on the other hand, this is unacceptable. SDA members are also prohibited from eating red meat as this could defile the soul. Christians can eat pretty much whatever they want as long as it’s not in excess.

Clothing for worship is also a big difference between SDA members and Christians. While both groups discourage members from wearing inappropriate outfits during worship services, the SDAs are stricter in implementing dress codes like long dresses for women and pants for men. But despite difference in beliefs and practices, both the SDA and Christian religion advocate worshiping God through Jesus and living a sin-free life.

Summary:
1. SDAs worship on Saturdays while Christians usually hold services during Sundays.
2. SDAs also use works of Ellen White as references aside from the Bible while Christians base all their teachings from the Holy Book.
3. The Christian religion came from the Catholic Church while SDAs were born from Protestant beliefs.
4. SDAs don’t believe in the immortality of the soul while Christians do.
5. SDAs believe that people are judged while they are still alive while Christians think it happens upon death.
6. SDAs don’t allow members to drink alcohol, smoke, or eat red meat. Christians have the freedom to eat what they like and occasionally drink or smoke. SDAs also have stricter dress codes compared to Christians.

  1. Whoever wrote this obviously did not do his homework… The SDA church is the only church that can back up everything they believe in from Scriptures, where Sunday churches cannot because they simply don’t study the bible enough to know what’s even written there… The Catholic church picks and chooses what they want to believe and what they don’t want to believe. A perfect example: compare the 10 commandments of Catholic church with the original 10 commandments of the Bible. Call the church a cult if you wish, but don’t be jealous for not being able to tell the right from wrong, for not being able to understand the Bible to its fullest extent, for .

    1. SDA’s believe the Sabbath is Saturday because Saturday is the seventh day of the week in which God rested from all his work to “rest.” Jesus observed Saturday as the Sabbath. Jesus rose from the dead after being crucified on Sunday (the 1st day of the week-see Matthew 28:1), which is why we celebrate “Easter Sunday,” which is coming up. The Catholic church admits to changing the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday. They also like to change things
    2. The SDA church is based on sola scriptura (Ellen White’s writings if used at all are only to supplement the teachings of the Bible). She does not contradict anything that is written in the Bible but rather is taken as a “commentary” of what the bible says if you will. She is considered the “Lesser Light,” with the “Greater Light” being the Bible.
    3. No comment.
    4. Ecclesiastes 9:5 says the “the dead know nothing.” If this is the case, how can the soul still be alive. The bible compares being dead to being “asleep” until Jesus comes to resurrect the dead. No mentioning of keeping your souls alive and going to heaven immediately and having family members watch down from above… That concept is man-made…
    5. Where in the world did you get this from? The only person that judges is God himself. Don’t be foolish and allow people in this world, including pastors, to judge you…
    6. True but for good reason, health. See Leviticus 11 for what Scriptures say about clean and unclean meat…

  2. It is not true that SDA’s forbid the eating of red meat because it defiles the soul. It is also not true that the SDA’s encourage members to eat anything but in moderation.

The truth is that SDA’s are encouraged to eat clean meat in moderation. Check Leviticus chapter 11. On the other hand, since the original diet for man according to Genesis 1:29 is plant-based, vegetarianism is encouraged and promoted in the church. For this reasons there are SDA’s who are vegetarians and there are some who are not but also eat in moderation the meat/fish/birds the Creator refers to as clean and wholesome for consumption.

Finally, all the teachings and doctrines of the SDA’s are bible based. Ellen White was a prolific spirit filled writer whose works are referenced only because they are in conformity with biblical teachings. Any piece that is in contradiction with the Holy Scriptures (The Bible) is rejected by the SDA’s. At church service or any religious gatherings the books used by SDA’s are the bible, and the SDA Hymn Book.

  3. In large your commentary is good; but the most glaring inaccuracy is the origin of Christianity – In no way did it come from the Catholic church.

In Acts chapters 1 – 2 we are taught that about 120 were gathered together with Peter (1:15); upon whom the holy Spirit was poured (2:14); and “Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand persons were added that day” (2:41).

This was after Christ’s resurrection and ascension, when the time for Pentecost was fulfilled (2:1) and was the founding of Christ’s church.

The 1906 US census recognized the Churches of Christ as autonomous bodies of followers of Christ adhering to the original church teachings found exclusively in the New Testament.

  4. I am catholic and believe that all of us have different beliefs but the same GOD and even the native americas believed of a higher power.

  5. SDA’s ARE Christians. The title of your page is terribly misleading. If you said “Difference between Seventh-Day Adventists and Other Christian Denominations” it would be more correct.

Also, SDA’s don’t out-and-out forbid drinking and smoking, but do very much discourage it, to the point that the vast majority of SDA’s do not drink or smoke, but some few do.

Dress in church varies by region and is generally no different from other Protestant churches in their region.

Your information is TERRIBLY outdated. Please visit an SDA church and do more research. Or perhaps ask an actual Adventist. Like me, perhaps – I’ve been SDA for over 20 years and am very active in my local congregation and have participated in state- and nation-wide church constituency meetings.

    • why have service on saturdays than sundays?

      thanks

      • Because Jesus worshipped on Sabbath. Saturday was considered the day of worship, but the catholic church changed the day of worship from Saturday to Sunday out of tradition. (http://www.biblesabbath.org/confessions.html) take a gander.

God is the same yesterday, today and forever more. Hebrews. 13:5
God said Remeber the Sabbath to keep it holy. Exdous 20:8
God only santified, blessed and hallowed one day out of the week. Gen. 2:1-3

These are just a few supporting verse. However, I will say to truly understand the Sunday vs. Sabbath debate, you would have to go back to the book Genesis and pray for the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom.

        Hope this helps

        • Bible gives very simple and straight forward instructions “Obey and Live”
Obedience is better than sacrifice. There is no amount of penance or prayer that can equate to obedience to God’s word.

1 Samuel:15:22: And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

I was just wondering if each church just discard what the Bible teaches and make their own 10 commandments and follow their own traditions, being a christian will be so easy. Once saved your always saved, why bother about sin, Judgement, Grace , saviour & Eternal Life.

Why do we still hold on to the Bible and do as we please?

Mark:7:7: Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Mark:7:8: For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
Mark:7:9: And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

God is a God of Love and His commandments is His Character, He does not force anyone, all He says is ,
John:14:15: If ye love me, keep my commandments.

Matt:19:17: And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.
Rev:12:17: And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.
Rev:14:12: Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus.

Man has gone far away from God and that is why today Modern Society accepts :
          1) Homosexuality
          2) Live in Relationships
          and many such evils.

Saturday or Sunday it does’nt matter to God? OR DOES IT?
Pray for the Holy Spirit to lead us to the light given in the Bible.

        • Jesus worshiped on the Sabbath as he was a Jew. Jesus fullfilled the Sabbath requierment and became our Sabbath rest in accordance with the passover. Jesus healed & broke Sabbath rules and used them to teach. Ellen White was a Mason, Adventist churches are overflowwing with Masonic symbology, a true mark of the beast. Adventist are not the remnate church unless they are all virgin male Jews. The day a man born again of Spirit worships on is irrelevent. Yes it’s true, the Sabbath was on a Saturday for the Jews, ask yourself, are you a Jew, Gentile or do you belong to the church of God? The old testement is the letter to learn from, it is not written to us, the gospels are miss placed in the new testement which is written to the saints. Study and show ourselves approved.

          • So according to you , Questions we should be asking :
            1) Jesus was a Jew … so why should we follow Him?
            2) He broke the sabbath rule, then why was it given in the first place? To later break it? Ask the question did Adam & Eve keep the sabbath? Were they Jews? When did Jews or Judaism begin? When did Sabbath begin?
            3) To the question are you a Jew? We are all descendants from Noah .. Ham,Shem & Japhath & then later Abraham. We are now spiritual Israelites (Sabbath Keepers).
            4) If old testament was not written to us but just a set of moral stories to learn from, then what do the prophecies in Daniel point to ? for the Jews or us ? What about Isaiah who points to the Messiah to be born in Matthew? (The birth of Jesus).
            5) Sabbath is the only Identity Proof to Identify the Creator.
            It tells us :
            a) Who the Creator is : God
            b) What is His dominion over : All Universe (Heavens & the earth).

You remove the sabbath and we have no proof of the creator & that is what the devil is trying to achieve.

No Wonder the Sabbath commandment in Exo :20:8 begins with the word REMEMBER, because a long time ago even before you and me were born He knew that we will find reasons to FORGET the Sabbath.

Whether Ellen G White was a mason is something that we should not Judge. All that is important for a true Christian is to follow the Bible Entirely, not some parts here and there.

  6. All christians profess to follow Jesus Christ and His teachings and to walk according to the Bible. But I wonder why do Christians worship on Sundays when Jesus Christ himself has never kept sunday as the sabbath day. There is absolutely no reference of Him worshipping or advocating his followers /disciples to worship on sunday. He always kept the sabbath on the 7th day which is saturday according to the 10 commandments.

If we have to go to heaven and live there for eternity , I wonder what laws they obey or keep in Heaven, because most Christians claim all laws are fulfilled and nailed to the cross and done away with. If there is no laws to keep, then logically speaking there exists no sin( because sin is the transgression of the law ) and in that case I don’t need a Saviour to save me. So christians must think and study the Bible carefully. Sin definitely exists and so does the 10 moral laws. I need Jesus Christ to save me from my sins, cause only His blood cleanses me from sin and by Grace only I receive eternal life or salvation. And so because Jesus Christ has done such a wonderful thing in my life , I want to show my Love to Him and that is why I keep the 10 Moral Laws which are still operational & includes the 4th commandment which is the Sabbath.

    • at old testament time those people who will not attend worship services, the church instructed to kill them, that’s is the sabbath so why the sda not follow this?

  7. I am a Lutheran Christian and I go to church on Sunday. My first born was baptised in the Luthern church. He is now 18yrs and now an SDA christian. Life at home has changed because of his new beliefs which are contrary to what I believe. I love my son dearly but becase of his beliefs there is always tension at home. What must I do?

    • You said : “Life at home has changed because of his new beliefs ”

Please find out if it has changed for the better or for the worse.? Has this new belief brought your son closer to God or away from Him? Because you love your son, you will be able to see the Joy and Growth he experiences in this true faith.

To the Question “What must I do”
Pray and ask God to open your eyes to see the new light shown in this new belief and you will find peace at home. Go to church with your son to experience it.

  8. I’m sorry, but this whole article is terribly incorrect and misleading. (We must all be as careful about not giving false witness as we would be for any of the other commandments!)

As a Seventh Day Adventist I hold no opinion of scriptures that differ with main-line protestant denominations concerning salvation. None. I’m simply a Christian who attends the Adventist church and I could as comfortably worship with any denomination that teaches that we are saved by the blood of Christ our savior. I think we Adventists are right about the seventh day sabbath observance and our dietary habits, but these issues certainly don’t give us any primacy for heaven!

    • Think of a man sentenced to death soon to be executed for crimes say x y z
Another man (Saviour ) steps in and says “I ‘ll die in your stead.
You re free to live .”
Do you think this man would repeat the crimes xyz. If he does its a shame.
But if he is grateful and truly loves his saviour then he will never repeat xyz .

      So its with us.
we re condemned to die because of SIN .Jesus stepped in.He died in our stead.
To reciprocate this great love and sacrifice we ought to obey him keep ALL the commandments which includes the Sabbath observance.
Keeping the law will not save me .But tells my Saviour How much I love Him.

Bible is my rule of faith.
      the Bible speaks:
      1) Sin is the “transgression of the law”
2)”the wages of sin is death”
3)”God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whosoever” ( any denomination or religion)”believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life”
4)In vain do you worship me by teaching for doctrines the traditions of men”.
We cant serve both God and man

God says, “If ye love me KEEP my commandments”.

The book of Hosea illustrates this very clearly, how we as God’s children have gone away from Him and how much He wants us to return back to Him and follow His commands.

  9. Richard, Paul teaches “to be absent from the body is to be present with The Lord. Also, Jesus teaches about a man named Lazarus. I don’t believe this was a parable since it included things that Abraham said to Lazarus. This does not appear to be a parable. “God is not the God of the dead, but the living.” Also, consider the transfiguration, and Elijah being taken up to heaven. The scriptures you are giving to back the belief that man remains dead until the reserection are making different points–not explaining what happens when we die. Your ideas on death conflict with scripture which is intended to teach us about what happens when we die. I could be wrong, sure, I only say these things in love. Also, the foods forbid are no worse for the body than many foods not forbidden. The point was for the Hebrews to be set apart from others. I consider you my brother in Christ. Would you deny this because I worship on Sunday? Keeping the Sabbath Holy is more than getting the day right. I know this because God always shows up when I’m in Church on Sunday. Saturday may be the proper day. I don’t know. I admit that, but division between Christians violates the Greatest two commandments. Love God, Love your neighbor. His Holy Spirit dwells in me the same as you. I think it’s unfair to say SDA are the only ones that can back their beliefs with scripture. You say the Catholics pick and choose what scriptures to believe. I agree, but don’t all denominations. I’m baptist, but I wouldn’t speak I’ll of SDA’s. See what I’m getting at? We are human, subject to error.

  10. This person definitely did not know what they were talking about. Adventists have no dress code, they just encourage more formal wear. Long dresses for woman is SO not true…. Teens especially wear what ever they want now to Church including short dresses.

  11. Amen brother! I grew up catholic but now am born again. Let us pray 4 eachother that one day we will all rejoice in truth
