Difference Between Tortilla and Wrap

Flatbreads, made with flour, water, and salt have been passed along many generations. In ancient times, they contained wild barley, oats, wheat or Bolboschoenus tubers. There are a variety of flatbreads worldwide which differ with the mode of preparation, ingredients as well as the size. They can be cooked on a hot metal griddle, Tava or pans, grilled over hot coal, baked and even fried. Some common types of flatbreads are tortillas and wraps. Although they may look similar, the two have differences.

What is Tortilla?

With an origin of Mesoamerica in the indigenous period, this is a thin flatbread made with unleavened, water-based corn or wheat dough. It is common in Mexican cuisines and is the basis of many dishes including vegetables, meat, and cheese, just to name a few.

Varieties of tortilla include:

  • Wheat tortillas

These are made with wheat and contain leavening agents such as baking powder, salt, and fat. They include tacos, quesadillas, and burritos.

  • Corn tortillas

Common in Central American and Mexican dishes, these are prepared with maize corn. They include chilaquiles, tostadas, flautas, and enchiladas.

What is Wrap?

This is soft bread rolled around a filling of own choice such as meat, guacamole, cheese, and grilled onions, just to name a few. To allow for more room for fillings, they are large, which makes it easier to cut into half. The most dough used to make wraps contain yeast.
