America by itself has over 440 manufacturers of cheese. The process might seem long and complicated, but it is so popular that it is all worth it for the business.

The most common types of cheese that most of you might have heard are mozzarella and parmesan. What are their differences and how are they being made and used? And what do they go perfectly with?

The beauty of Mozzarella

As you may have seen in television, cheese often has to be aged for many days, months or years for it to be truly ‘ripe’. This is where these two types of cheese vary. Mozzarella is a cheese that does not need to age long in the storage room, which is why it is relatively soft. It is easier to cook mozzarella than parmesan because of its soft texture.

There are actually two types of mozzarella cheese, the fresh and the aged. Cow’s milk, from which it is made, is aged in the storage area for either a very short time or a slightly longer time, depending on the desired type.

Mozzarella is mostly used for pizza or for any treat that has a phenomenal cheesy taste. Its softness makes it easy to melt in the oven.

The toughness of Parmesan

Parmesan cheese is one of a kind. It is not cheap because it has been kept in storage for many months. Parmesan cheese is an example of the hard type of cheese. This is the reason why the use of parmesan is generally just as a topping on salads and spaghetti. Parmesan is known for its very strong flavor. With parmesan, you can really taste the cheese even if you just add just a little of it on top of your meal.

Originally, parmesan was made from buffalo’s milk. However, with the lack of resources on how to feed and take care of one, and the rarity of the animal, parmesan these days is basically made from cow’s milk too.

These two types of cheese are just two of the many variations of cheese used by the whole world. As we all know, cheese is made from milk. Yet even though most types of cheese are made from the same type of milk, there is still a huge variety in tastes, textures, and toughness.

One of the most interesting cheese facts is regarding Swiss cheese holes. Swiss cheese has holes because the gas expands during the ripening period inside the cheese curds. Remember that the older the cheese is, whatever type it might be, the more expensive it is. Once it is sold in stores, you can actually no longer smell as much of its stinkiness as you would smell in the storage area.
