Cheese comes in many varieties, including different flavors and colors. The American and Swiss cheese are two different cheeses that are widely preferred. Though they might have certain similarities, both the American cheese and Swiss cheese are different.

A processed cheese, American cheese, may come in yellow, orange or white colors and have a mild flavor. On the other hand, Swiss cheese is related to a variety of cheese found in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the US and that resembles Swiss Emmental. The Swiss cheese comes with a piquant but not that sharp taste.

One of the differences that can be noticed between American and Swiss cheese is that the later one molds faster as it is made from only milk. On the contrary, no molds are grown in American cheese as it contains preservatives that prevent its growth.

Moreover, coming to the health aspect, the Swiss cheese is healthier than the American cheese. This is because Swiss cheese is not processed as like the American cheese.

Another noticeable difference between American and Swiss cheese is that the later ones come with holes. The holes in Swiss cheese are formed because of the development of air pockets as the cheese ripens.

When comparing the texture, the American cheese has a smooth texture than that of the Swiss cheese. The Swiss cheese comes in semi-soft texture.

When comparing the nutritional contents, the Swiss cheese comes with a calorie of 106 and the American cheese comes with 96 calories. When a slice of Swiss cheese

Contains 7.78 g fat, 26 mg Cholesterol, 7.54 protein, 0.37g Sugar, 1.51 g Carbohydrate, one slice of American cheese contains 7.39 g fat, 23mg cholesterol, 5.37 protein, 1.83 g Sugars and 1.97g Carbohydrate.

While the Swiss cheese comes with 5 per cent of vitamin A, 22 per cent of calcium and no iron, the American cheese comes with 16 per cent of Vitamin A, 57 per cent of Calcium and three per cent of Iron.

  1. I don’t blame you for thinking that Swiss Cheese has holes, because if one googles “Swiss Cheese” one really, to my surprise, only finds pictures of cheese with holes in them. I live in Switzerland and I can tell you that there are only a few types of cheeses, that actually have those stereotypical giant holes in them. To be honest, I rarely see cheese with giant holes. Most of them are either completely “holeless” or have a few tiny lonely holes here and there. I think its the “Emmentaler Cheese” that has become famous for having massive holes. Cheeses like “Appenzeller”, “Raclette”, “Tête de Moine” and “Gruyère” are all either almost or completely “holeless”…
