Difference Between Dielectric Boots and Overshoes

In many aspects of life, precautionary measures must be taken to enhance safety. Such is the prevention of slips and electric shocks. Dielectric boots and overshoes are some of the protection measures taken in several activities.

What is Dielectric Boots?

This is an electrically insulating boot with a vulcanized rubber sole and an integral steel toe cap. They are mainly used in situations where there is a risk of electric shock due to high voltages, such as in the area of live power. They also provide superior slip resistance. These boots provide high voltage protection which may exceed 20KV for over 8 hours over the complete boot and 35KV over a period of 3 minutes.

The boot shaft has extra shin protection, kick off lug and an ankle guard. The boot sole is slip resistant, fuel, and oil resistant and cold insulation.

What is Overshoes?

Overshoes are shoes made of rubber that are waterproof. The shoes are mainly used for wearing over normal shoes in the snow or rain. Cyclists may also use them to keep the rain and wind off their legs.

There are several reasons why people may prefer overshoes;

  • They are slip resistant
  • They are affordable
  • They are easy to maintain
  • They can be worn over normal shoes
  • They are fully waterproof
  • Is easy to clean

Similarities between Dielectric Shoes and Overshoes

  • Both are slip resistant
  • Both offer forms of protection either from high voltage, snow or rain.
  • Both are waterproof

Differences between Dielectric Shoes and Overshoes

  1. Purpose

Dielectric boots are mainly used in situations where there is a risk of electric shock due to high voltages, such as in the area of live power. On the other hand, overshoes are mainly used for wearing over normal shoes in the snow or rain.

  1. Places of use

While dielectric boots are used in places where there is a risk of electrical shock, overshoes are used on a day to day life basis to protect from the rain or snow.

  1. Electrical purpose

Dielectric boots are electrically insulated to protect from any possible electrical shock. On the contrary, overshoes are not insulated in any way and do not offer protection against electrical shock.

Summary of Dielectric Boots vs. Overshoes

Safety is an aspect in life that should be taken with the gravity it deserves. In areas where accidents can be prevented or controlled, it is important to adhere to the guidelines. For instance, in areas where an electrical shock is likely to occur, dielectric boots should be used. In places where slips due to rain or snow can occur, overshoes should be used.
