Difference Between Flip Flops and Sandals

 Flip Flops vs Sandals

Footwear has been created for the purpose of protecting the feet against the environment. It has been worn by people since ancient times. It is also used for fashion and adornment and comes in different, styles, designs, materials, and types.

It comes in leather, plastic, rubber, wood, jute, metal, and textile materials. There are many types of footwear. The most common are: shoes, boots, sandals, and flip flops. Both sandals and flip flops are open types of footwear. They are both usually used outdoors but can also be used indoors.

Flip flops are also known as thong sandals, thongs, sandals, or slippers. A flip flop consists of a flat sole that is held loosely on the foot by a Y-shaped strap that passes between the big toe and the second toe to the sides of the foot.

It does not secure the ankles and is usually made of rubber, but it can also be made from hemp, cotton, and coconut. It is the most common footwear in developing countries like India, Pakistan, the Philippines, and other Southeast Asian countries due to its affordability.

Sandals, on the other hand, consist of a sole that is held firmly on the foot by straps or thongs that pass over the instep and are secured at the ankles. A sandal may have flat soles or it may have heels.

It is worn during warm weather and is common in countries that have warm climates. It is the oldest known footwear and was made of willow leaves, sagebrush bark, twigs, and fibers.

The sole of the sandal may be made of rubber, leather, wood, tatami, or rope. Several types of sandals are available, namely:

Caligae, which was worn by centurions.
 Clogs, which have wooden soles.
Fisherman sandals for men and boys.
Geta, which is a Japanese elevated thong which is made of wood.
Grecian sandal, which features interlaced straps.
Jelly sandals which are made of PVC plastic.
Jipsin, which is a Korean straw sandal.
Patten, which is oversized and is suitable for walking in mud.
Paduka, which is an Indian sandal now worn only by monks.
Roman sandals that have buckles and straps.
Saltwater sandals, which were developed in the 1940s and worn by children.
Soft foam sandals with surgical tubing straps.
T-bar sandals which are made for children that feature an enclosed heel and toe with the strap secured by Velcro.
Zori, which is a flat Japanese sandal made of straw, cloth, leather, or rubber.

Summary:

1. Flip flops have soles that are loosely held by a Y-shaped strap while sandals have soles that are firmly held by thongs or straps.
2. Flip flops are usually flat-soled while sandals are either flat or fashioned with heels.
3. Both can be made from different materials and are best used outdoors during warm weather, but sandals have straps that secure at the ankle while flip flops do not.
