Amoxicillin vs Augmentin

There has been confusion when it comes to the nature of amoxicillin and augmentin. Doctors, websites, and other people recommend augmentin for a certain illness, and then they would say amoxicillin would work on it too. Both of these medications are members of the penicillin family. Both are also antibiotics that fight bad bacteria in the body.

Amoxicillin, to begin with and to put it simply, is an upgrade version of the very first penicillin. Compared to penicillin, amoxicillin can resist the damage caused by the stomach acid once consumed making it more potent. Although amoxicillin is sensitive to the attack of any Staphylococcal enzymes, its effects can still last longer on gram negative cell walls. Doctors usually recommend the use of amoxicillin on patients with illnesses caused by any unknown organisms. Not only that, amoxicillin is also known to have better effects against anaerobic bacteria, making it number one on the list of most recommended drugs by doctors. The major diseases and bacteria that amoxicillin can battle are infections in the bladder, ear, pneumonia, and E. coli. For other more advanced medical conditions, amoxicillin can be combined with other medications to make it more effective. These are some of the most important benefits that amoxicillin can give.

The basic function of augmentin is to empower amoxicillin. Augmentin contains clavulante with β-lactamase inhibitory action which fully enables amoxicillin to reach and beat down a different range of organisms including even those that are antibiotic resistant. Augmentin is a known antibiotic that is widely used in households and hospitals because of its known combating properties against harmful pathogens. It treats bacterial infections in the following areas: infections in the upper respiratory tract, e.g., tonsillitis, otitis media, and sinusitis; lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchopneumonia and chronic or acute bronchitis; skin and soft tissue infections; dental infections; and other sorts of infections, such as intra-abdominal sepsis, Escherichia coli, and so many more.

Another main difference that one must bear in mind besides the conditions these medications can cure are their compositions. Amoxicillin stands alone as a medicine while augmentin has amoxicillin with a combination of clavulante potassium.

Because both are related and have a lot of common factors, people find it hard to distinguish one from the other. However, with the right definition of the two medicines and by differentiating them, it will be easy for you to know which is which. Now you will be able to understand why the doctors or the websites recommended augmentin or amoxicillin.

SUMMARY:

1.Amoxicillin can battle infections in the bladder, ear, pneumonia, and E. coli while augmentin can cure bacterial infections, sinusitis, skin infections, urinary tract infections, and even bronchitis.

2.Amoxicillin is a stand-alone medicine while augmentin is amoxicillin with clavulante potassium.

3.Amoxicillin is an upgrade version of the very first penicillin while the basic function of augmentin is to empower amoxicillin.

  1. So why does augmentin hurt my stomach and amoxicillin doesn’t?

  2. So can I mix augmenting and penicillin I have an infection in my jaw bone and can’t get to the dentist until I can come up with 300 dollars or my Medicaid kicks back in and this is not joke was in the hospital 3 days in a row my face looks like a chipmunk that has his cheeks full of food well just my right side looks like that and feels like i have a medium sized rock in my sinus..its so bad that the infection is pushing into my sinus only reason I am asking is they say the infection isn’t going to go away until seen at the oral surgeon and was told it could kill me so to keep it from getting any further I wanted to see if mixing those would be ok

    • Please go to your dentist. Tell them about not being able to afford it and let them tell you what options they have available. That infection can spread into your brain area.
