A dissertation is a long research based essay on a particular subject. For University students this is usually completed in their last year of University. A dissertation -which differs from a thesis- is usually 60 – 100 pages at a set font and type spacing (e.g. ariel, 12pt, single spacing), although the final product tends to be longer than 100 pages.

Note that this can change from course to course and from university to university

Actually, for the Bsc (Hons) you will be required to produce a project or some form of a personal work, not necessarily a dissertation!

The “gun shot” is that BSc (Hons) is more intense, it takes a little more time, and is considered by employers to be of a higher standard than just BS/BSc.

The question ” what is the difference between B.Sc and B.Sc (Hons)” was not satisfactorily answered here in this article.

To provide an accurate and global answer, you will answer the question from this perspective:

What should a student do–either at the point of entry or in the course of his/her study–to obtain a B.Sc (Hons)?

    Hi,
I did a four year degree with thesis. My degree certificate mentioned as special degree( BSc SHS, specialized in SLT). And I have a first class. Therefore can I use BSc(Hons) instead of Special (Spp)? Could you please guide me!

BSc (Hons) is really being awarded the degree at a higher (with honors) level than just a BSc (pass level). You can achieve either doing the same program.ie the higher your GPA then the closer you get to being awarded the BSc degree with Honors ie BSc(Hons).

I’m from Sri Lanka and I did a BSc degree (not a honours one). But I did the final thesis and the viva voce as well.
So why my degree is not as valid as BSc (hons)?
I followed the exact same modules which Bsc (hons) has withings 3 years, 8/9 modules per semester. While BSc (hons) has only 3-5 modules per semester.
My point is, It is really unfair that I get lower chances with BSc(hons) graduates.

And is there any way I can upgrade my BSc into the same level as BSc hons?
Any exam or qualification at least?

Honours B.SC is 4 years instead of 3 years on undergraduate degree.
