Urdu vs Punjabi

Punjabi has a slight similarity with Urdu. Most of the Urdu-speaking people can understand written Punjabi with certain difficulties but will find it hard to understand the written script.

Punjabi, which comes in Shahmukhi and Gurmukhi script, is an Indo-Aryan language. This language is mainly spoken in the northwestern parts of India and some regions of Pakistan. Punjabi is the official language of the state of Punjab. This is the second largest language spoken in the Punjab province of Pakistan.

Coming in different dialects, Majhi dialect is one of the most-used dialects and is also a prestigious one. The other dialects that are used include: Pothowari, Chenavari, Shahpuri, Hindko, Malwi, Doabi, Pwadhi, Dogri, Multani and Dhani.

The language emerged as a language in the 11th century, and traces can be fond in the writings of the eleventh Nath Yogis Charpatnah and Gorakshanath. Different scripts are used for writing Punjabi. Shahmukhi and Nastaliq scripts are widely used.

Urdu is the official language of Pakistan and is also widely used in Northern India. Urdu is also an Indo-Aryan language which has its origins in India. Urdu is known to have originated in or around New Delhi. This language developed because of the Persian influence. It developed as part of the interaction between the Persian languages and the Sanskrit language. Urdu was mainly developed in the military camps, and the word “Urdu” itself means “army” in Turkish.

The Urdu alphabet is based on the Nasta’liq script. Urdu comes mainly with four dialects: Dakhni, Rekhta, Pinjari, and Modern Vernacular Urdu.
