Difference between stuffed and deep dish pizza

When it comes to snacks, pizzas are the favourite of so many people. It is one of the most popular food items in the US as well as many other countries throughout the world. They come in various types, flavours and nowadays, various shapes and sizes as well. In different parts of the world, people and famous restaurants use various methods to prepare a pizza. They can be thick crust, thin crust, cheese-filled crust as well as so many other types. In addition to this, a wide variety of flavours and toppings are consumed all over the globe, the most common ones being extra cheese, pepperoni, anchovy, artichoke, fajita etc.

To describe it more formally, a pizza is an oven baked flat bread that is topped with cheese and tomato sauce. In addition to these, various types of vegetables, meats and condiments are added to the topping as well.

In general, pizzas are often distinguished on the basis of the preparation method used. Pizzas can have varying crust thickness, can have stuffed crusts and can be deep dish pizzas as well. In this article, we are going to discuss stuffed and deep dish pizzas.

Stuffed pizzas

Stuffed pizzas are different from others in that they generally have a much deeper toping density. Initially, a deep layer of dough forms a bowl in a pan (usually a high sided pan is used). Toppings and cheese are then added to it. This is not all! Since it is a stuffed pizza, an additional layer of dough is again added on the top. The dough is also pressed on the sides of the crust. This is the stage at which the dough top is thin and has a round, domed appearance. The next step that pizza makers take is to poke a small hole to allow the escape of air and steam during cooking. The hole is made in the top of the lid. The reason this is done is to ensure that the pizza does not explode. Before baking a typical stuffed crust pizza, pizza makers normally add tomato sauce over the top crust.

Stuffed pizzas are very deep. What makes them different from other pizzas, is this very characteristic.

Deep dish pizzas

Deep dish pizzas are also very deep as is suggested by their name. The crust is indeed very deep and creates a thick pizza that resembles a pie more than it resembles a flatbread. The entire pizza is very thick but this is not always the case. Some pizza makers, such as those that prepare the traditional Chicago style deep dish pizzas, make a crust that has thin to medium thickness.

A deep dish pizza is baked in a steel pan that is round. Oil is added so as to create a fried effect on the outside of the crust.

Differences

Deep dish pizzas have a crust that rises up to the sides of the pan. In contrast to this, stuffed pizzas are very deep and are even deeper than deep dish pizzas. Its topping density is also deeper than any other pizza and that includes its deep dish counterpart.

Many a times, stuffed pizza is easily distinguished from other pizzas due to the fact that it has a lot of cheese. Deep dish pizzas, however, are more flavourful and have more tomato sauce but less cheese compared to a stuffed pizza. In short, the focal point of stuffed crust pizza is plenty of cheese whereas for the deep dish pizza, it is the right balance of sauce and cheese.
