Difference Between Acuvue and Acuvue 2

Acuvue Vs Acuvue 2

If you have some eye problems or if you just want to make your eyes more attractive looking then there are some contact lenses available, which can do the trick. Contact lenses nowadays are either for therapeutic correction of vision or for aesthetic purposes only. But whatever your reason is, there is a particular brand that has been on top with the production of these products ‘“ the ACUVUE. This contact lens brand is actually manufactured under the umbrella of Johnson and Johnson Vision Care.

Along the line of Acuvue lenses, there are different products being marketed under the same brand. One is Acuvue, another would be Acuvue Advance and there’s also the Acuvue 2 lens. More importantly, what’s the difference between Acuvue and Acuvue 2?

Acuvue is actually the first type of disposable lens (the first of its kind) created back in 1987 for the eyes. It has long been standing as the number 1 contact lens brand in the world even up to this date. However, there has been a slight move to face out Acuvue from the market as newer contact lenses like the Acuvue 2 have been manufactured at a wide scale. Although both lenses are made of etafilcon A., the latter (Acuvue 2) was somewhat modified by decreasing the overall lens height while enhancing the its mid-periphery at the same time. Overall, these alterations provide more eye comfort for the user.

It is also important to note that both lens models are recommended for replacement every week or bi monthly. After which, a new set of contact lens needs to be used. They have the same wearing indications (EW, and DW) and also have similar water content. Both Acuvue and Acuvue 2 have a visibility tint so the user can easily spot and handle such. The Acuvue 2 however has a slightly greater center thickness than its predecessor. It has about 0.084 mm thickness as compared to Acuvue’s 0.070 mm.

All in all, the combination of improved comfort, enhanced lens durability and increased optical performance has made both contact lenses way ahead of the competition. Nevertheless, they still differ in the following aspects:

1. Acuvue is the first and older model of contact lens as opposed to Acuvue 2.

2. Acuvue 2 has an enhanced mid-periphery and reduced lens height as compared to Acuvue.

3. Acuvue 2 has a slightly thicker lens center than Acuvue.
