Yarn means spun thread for weaving or knitting. Wool means soft hair derived from the fleece of sheep or other animals. Wool is a type of yarn.

Yarn generally refers to long continuous interlocked fibers that may be used for textiles, knitting, weaving, etc. Yarn may be of different materials including cotton, animal fleece, synthetic, etc. Cotton or synthetic yarn would generally be used to produce textiles or fabric. Yarn is actually made by twisting the fibers together through a process called spinning. The different types of twists that are given to the fiber determine the quality and the texture of the yarn. The other process of making yarn from the fiber is bonding. It is the basic component that goes into making a fabric. It is this quality of the yarn that generally determines its usage.
