The Xperia X10 is the first foray of Sony Ericsson into Google Android. So let’s compare it to the current smartphone benchmark; the iPhone. As already mentioned, the Xperia runs the Android operating system, but it is the older 1.6 version instead of the newer 2.0 and 2.1 as users are yet to receive an update. This operating system is very different from the iOS that runs on the iPhone. And because of that, the applications that they have are not compatible with each other. The iPhone has more apps at the moment but it is expected that Android would close that gap pretty soon.
In terms of the hardware, there is very little comparison to be made as both devices have more or less the same specs and features. The most noticeable difference is probably the bigger screen of the Xperia as it measure 4 inches compared to 3.5 inches for the iPhone. When it comes to small screens, bigger is always better. The 1GB internal memory of the Xperia seems paltry when compared to the 16/32GB models of the iPhone. But the Xperia evens this out with its microSD card slot that can accommodate up to 32GB cards.
When it comes to the camera, the Xperia has the better one as it has an 8 megapixel rear camera while the iPhone only sports a 5 megapixel camera. The Xperia camera can only shoot video at WVGA resolution though while the iPhone can shoot HD quality video. This isn’t really a limitation with the Xperia hardware but more of the version of Android. The update that the Xperia is expected to get later this year should address this minor problem. What the Xperia lacks is a front facing camera that would be used to conduct video calls. The iPhone has a VGA front facing camera but could only be used when using Wi-Fi and not when using a 3G network.
