Difference Between the Waist and Hips

the Waist vs Hips

The waist is part of the abdomen that lies between the hips and the rib cage. Waists are the narrowest part of the torso. The hip is the region located in a lateral position to the gluteal region, or the buttocks, overlying the greater trochanter of the femur and inferior to the iliac crest.

When talking of the waist, there is much talk about waistlines. It is the horizontal line where the waist becomes the narrowest. There is a general saying that people who diet have a low waistline. Women have narrower waists than men.

Now about hips, three bones in the pelvis fuse together to form the hipbones. These are also part of the hip region. It is the hip joint, which is between the femur and acetabulum of the pelvis that supports the body while standing up or running or walking. The hip joints play an important role in retaining balance. During puberty, the hips of the female widen.

When talking of hips and waists, the most talked about is the waist-hip ratio. If a woman has a waist–hip ratio of 0.7 and if a man has a hip-waist ratio of 0.9, then they are considered to have a healthy body.

Generally, the measurement of the waist is taken two inches above the umbilicus, and the measurement of the hip is taken two inches below the umbilicus. In strictest terms, the circumference of the waist is measured at midway between the iliac crest and the lowest rib. The circumference of the waist will represent a person’s abdominal obesity. Hip circumference is measured at the widest part of the buttocks. In case of pregnancy, the waist circumference is measured horizontally one inch above the navel.
