There has always been a huge difference between a nurse and a doctor. As you might have witnessed yourself, a doctor is the one who does the operations while the nurse is the one who assists him. Hence, what might really be the difference is what they have studied, which is why they reached such professions. How can a nurse become a doctor? And can a doctor really play the role of a nurse? Most people do not know much about this, what they do know is that the doctors spend more years in school than a nurse. But why?

Being a doctor

It is entirely right that doctors do spend more years in school. This is because a doctorate is a master’s course that needs to be taken even after you have graduated from a bachelor’s degree. After the master’s degree, a doctor needs to go through a residency, or put what he learned into practice, which of course depends on what aspect he specializes on. As you all know, there are different types of doctors. For example, a neurosurgeon, an ob-gyn, or even a psychologist.

Due to the many years of learning and experience, a doctor can properly prescribe medicines. A doctor can also diagnose a disorder or disease while a nurse cannot because of all the lessons a doctor needs to undergo. A doctor is the one who decides which treatment a patient has to take and also keeps track of the patient’s improvement. Therefore, a doctor makes more than what a nurse does simply because he has invested way more than a nurse practitioner. A doctor, indeed, has much more responsibility than a nurse.

Being a nurse

A nurse is the one who assists the doctor. A nurse primarily graduates from a 4 year bachelor’s degree and has to work his or her way up to pass the registered nurse’ exams. A nurse, due to the many graduates nowadays, also needs to gain more experience to have an edge to be hired in a prestigious hospital or company. A nurse checks a patient in the most basic ways, like BP or X-ray and the like. However, a nurse cannot diagnose a disease or disorder as well or as easily as a doctor can. This is because, as stated, nurse practitioners do not have that kind of experience and learning that doctors hold.

A nurse practitioner can also prescribe a medicine, but this is limited to what they can diagnose in a patient. It has to be on a patient-by-patient basis. These are medicines like vicodin, valium and the like. Nurse practitioners, when they are registered and have a license, can also prescribe more intense but still basic medicines like narcotic pain relievers.

Both of these jobs are full of stress. The reason is simple, since it involves saving human lives. Thus, these jobs are both very satisfying as well because they help maintain the health of the patients. For what it is worth, they both are similar in some ways, but very different in many aspects.
