Maid of Honor vs Matron of Honor
The maid of honor and matron of honor both help the bride-to-be with almost everything she needs and will need before and after her wedding ceremony. Maids of honor are chosen because they are the most trusted friends of the bride. So what is the difference between a maid of honor and a matron of honor? In many weddings, you must have seen a maid as well as a matron helping the bride. The difference is not in their duties or their being more trusted than the other. The difference is in the marital status of the women whom one chooses to be the trusted ones. If the woman chosen for the honor is unmarried, then she is called the maid of honor, and if she is married, she is called the matron of honor.
Sometimes the would-be bride chooses two different friends, one married and another unmarried, to carry out the same duty of supporting her, and such brides have both a maid of honor and a matron of honor. Usually, the brides have either a maid of honor or a matron of honor as there are very few who have more than one truest friend.
Once a person becomes a maid or matron of honor, they are supposed to carry out a lot of duties like: choosing the dress with the bride; arranging a bridal shower party; arranging a bachelorette party; buying the dress for the bride along with the dresses of the bridesmaids; preparing a speech for the reception; taking care of her at all steps; choosing flowers with the bride; making sure the bridesmaids who come from different cities and different phases of the bride’s life are introduced well with each other.
Being a maid of honor or matron of honor is a privilege as it shows that the would-be bride considers you to be her most trusted, most-dear friend. It can be difficult also as the responsibilities of the maid of honor are many, and they have to be carried out so that there is no misunderstanding between the bride’s party, family, and friends. Most of all, the bride’s nerves depend on the maid or matron of honor as she is supposed to keep the bride calm and not let her worry about the organization part of the wedding.

A woman is called a maid or matron of honor when she is chosen by the bride as her closest friend and confidant during the wedding arrangements. If the woman is unmarried, she is called a maid of honor, and if she is married, she is called a matron of honor. The women being married or unmarried is the only difference.

I know that traditionally the Matron of Honor is a married woman. However, increasingly, unmarried women of a certain age – say 40 and up – are being asked to carry out these duties – as the best friends of brides who are a bit on the mature side themselves. Many of these women prefer the title Matron of Honor as it is more befitting their age and maturity level. Yes Matron used to mean married, but then, Maid used to mean virgin.

the maid of honor is supposed to buy the bride’s dress? never heard that before and i find it ridiculous.
