Cancer is a formidable disease that occurs not only with a few groups of people but to anybody regardless of age, sex, and race. It is a dreaded illness that fears nothing and no one as it may target either the richest or the poorest. There are also a variety of cancer types which typically are identified through several factors.

Blood cancer is a particular type of cancer that inflicts the blood, bone marrow, and the lymphatic system. Two cancers under this type are myeloma and lymphoma. How do the two differ from each other?

Myeloma is a type of cancer that targets the plasma cells—a component of white blood cells. In human anatomy, almost all new cells are produced by the bone marrow thus making it also the site of growth for abnormally developing plasma cells. On the other hand, lymphoma is a cancer of a part of the immune system. It specifically breeds on lymphocytes–the immune system cells. The lymph nodes, the areas where the lymph is found, become the breeding ground for abnormally dividing lymphocytes.

A various presence of myeloma is termed as multiple myeloma. Meanwhile, lymphomas fall under two types, namely: Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (HL) and Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (NHL). HL has five subtypes while NHL has 30.

Causes of both blood cancers are not confirmed, yet parameters, such as old age, infection, and immunodeficiency, and genetics are considered. There is a higher incidence of myeloma in men than in women.

Symptoms are usually of a wide variety. In myeloma, enlargement and pain of bones are a probable basis while in lymphoma, enlargement and painless swelling of several lymph nodes in the body and the spleen are looked at. Other symptoms may include fever, chills, weight loss, and fatigue.

Diagnosis can be made through blood tests, x-rays, biopsy and urine tests. Staging can also be done to better identify the severity of blood cancers. Bone marrow aspiration is also a standard diagnostic procedure for both cancers.

There is no permanent treatment for myeloma while in lymphoma a combination of therapies are guaranteed to cure the disease. The complexities of cancer are the reason why there is no definitive treatment for each. Medications can also be given by physicians for thorough medical management.
