Differences Between Roxicodone and Oxycodone

The topic for this article is more medical in context and would probably be of more use to those who know of, or would be familiar with, certain mental illnesses. Many may not have heard of a certain type of medication called Roxicodone. In fact, it may be interchanged with another medication called Oxycodone. This is what this article aims to point out and differentiate. While these medications may be a bit of a mouthful to utter or say, hopefully this article would be able to give more information about each pill and how they are similar and how they are different as well. A little bit of a background about each pill would be tackled in this article as well.

OXYCODONE

Let’s start with Oxycodone.

Oxycodone is an active drug. This drug is used as an opioid pain medication. Opioid is a psychoactive chemical. It sometimes works like morphine, and it is also considered as ‘opiate’, and its main use is a decreased perception of pain. This type of drug works more on the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as on the gastrointestinal tract.

Another term to opioid is narcotic. This naturally means that it is and should only be prescribed by a physician. This cannot be purchased as an over-the-counter drug. Physicians would prescribe this type of medication to treat moderate to severe pain. More importantly, the prescription is for a round-the-clock type of treatment. This is definitely very different from any simple pill or medication that you can buy over-the-counter that aims to target any pain experienced, because these types of medication are considered ‘taken only when needed’ type of medication. While this type of narcotic is quite dangerous, in a sense that if taken too much of the prescribed dosage, it may be habit forming. This is why it is imperative that not only should this drug be prescribed, but also one should meticulously follow the dosage.

Roxicodone

Now here is another medication that is confusing for several readers. There have been many inquiries about the difference between Roxicodone and Oxycodone. The answer is that there is no difference. For starters, if you are aware of medicines in general, there is the term ‘generic’. In medical terms, this means that these are drugs that have the same chemical composition to the branded drugs. Another definition for ‘generic’ means ‘pertaining to all members of a genus’.

With this, the generic medicine is Oxycodone. Roxicodone is a brand under Oxycodone. Should you go to any pharmacy and show them your prescription with Oxycodone, you would probably be given Roxicodone, since Oxycodone is its generic.

Another easier example to point out is the generic medicine: Acetaminophen. Brand names that are under Acetaminophen include: Tylenol, Sinutab, Excedrin, to name a few.

So what is the difference between Roxicodone and Oxycodone? There isn’t any. Should you be prescribed Oxycodone, upon purchase, you may be given Roxicodone. So, it might be good to verify with your physician if a branded drug is better or not. Then again, it would also be better to try out a couple of drugs first to see if your body would react to it.

These medications, or better yet, prescription drugs need to be recommended by your physician. They have to be taken as indicated for your proper dosage. When there are certain reactions noticed as soon as you start taking the drug, you have to inform your physician right away. This may be an indication that your body does not react well with it, so another Oxycodone brand may be prescribed to you, or another medication altogether.
