Difference Between Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris

Pinot Grigio vs Pinot Gris

Pinot grigio and Pinot gris are wines that are almost the same type of wines with two different names. Most of the distillers are in the habit of giving different names to the same type of wines which makes it a bit confusing among users.

Pinot grigio and Pinot gris come from the same grape variety. These grapes are white in color with a brownish pink or greyish skin. The grape has its origin in France and comes from the Burgundian Pinot family. In France, the wine prepared from this type of grape is known as Pinot gris. The same wine distilled in Italy is known as Pinot grigio. Though this wine originated in France, the Italians have to be thanked for its wide popularity.

When comparing the two wines, Pinot grigio is crisp and light-bodied having floral and stone fruit aromas. They are also a bit spicy. On the other hand, Pinot gris wines are richer and full-bodied with a viscous texture. In comparison, Pinot gris wines have a greater aging potential and cellaring.

Pinot gris mainly comes from Alsace in the Northeastern part of France on the German border. Pinot grigio comes from Friuli which lies in the Northeast region of Italy, bordering Austria and Slovenia.

When compared to Pinot grigio, Pinot gris wines also contain higher alcohol levels. Pinot grigio also has a more acidic structure and comes with a clean finish when compared to Pinot gris.
