Difference Between Shiraz and Syrah

Shiraz vs Syrah

One can come across wines that have almost similar flavors yet come in different names. Shiraz and Syrah are two such types of wine that comes in almost the same flavor but in different names.

Shiraz and Syrah wines are produced from the same grape but grown in different regions. Shiraz grapes are largely grown in Australia, and all other Shiraz grapes grown outside of this country are known as Syrah grapes.

Shiraz wines that come from Australia are ripe and have a chocolate character with a spicy element. Shiraz wine, especially from Southern Australia, has a peppery taste which cannot be seen in Syrah wines. Shiraz also comes with plum and blackberry flavors.

Unlike Syrah, Shiraz is known to be more intense and more succulent. They also have a better longevity than Syrah grapes. Syrah wine, which is also considered to be a noble wine, comes in leathery flavors.

Syrah wine is a native of the Rhone Valley in southeastern France. However, there is considerable differences between the Syrah grapes of the northern and the southern Rhone Valley. Unlike the southern Rhone Syrah wine, the northern Syrah wine is considered to be more powerful ,vigorous, leathery, and meaty. In southern Rhone Syrah wine, 13 separate varieties of grapes are allowed.
Now Syrah and Shiraz grapes are cultivated in many parts of the world. However, the grapes that come from Australia are the best known for brewing wines. And this is what makes Shiraz wines from Australia the most preferred. Shiraz wines come in a higher quality than the Syrah wines. Moreover, Shiraz wine is priced a bit more than Syrah wines since it comes in a better quality.
