Honda accord is a family car manufactured in series by the Honda Motor Company of Japan. Its production started in 1976 and it has been sold in car markets around the world, including Europe, America and Africa. The Honda accord is noted as the first Japanese car to be manufactured in the United States and it was the best selling car by a Japanese company there from 1982 to 1997. The debut accord was a compact hatchback but various body styles were offered in ensuring years, notably the coupe and sedan. Rivaling it in the same family car series is the Passat, a family car manufactured by Volkswagen, a German car manufacturer that also owns several other car brands.

The Passat has under gone six design generations since it was first manufactured in 1973. Unlike the Accord, the Passat mainly falls in the sedan car market and takes on different brand names depending on the country of its market, for example in the US the first Passat generation, the B1, was first sold under the name Dasher. Subsequent generations’ cars took names like Santana, Quantum, Carat and recently Passat CC, which is a coupe model of the Passat.

The 2009 Passat comprises of a 200- horsepower, 2.0 liter premium gas engine and six speed automatic transmission, with auto-manual option. The 2009 Accord has 3 engine options of 177,190 and 271 horsepower with 2.4 and 3.5 liter regular gas options. The Accord has 5 speed automatic, 5 and 6 speed manual transmission types but generally the Accord has a slightly more massive engine than the Passat and as a result it will not give you good gas mileage as the Passat but bear the fact that smaller engines will have to work harder thus more maintenance needs.
The Honda Accord has more models to choose from than the Passat, including four 2-door coupes and six 4-door sedans while the Passat only has two 4-door models that include the sedan komfort and the station wagon komfort, both front wheel drive cars.
On price, the 2009 Volkswagen Passat slightly costs more than the 2009 Honda Accord starting at $28,300 and $20,905 respectively but worth noting is that the Passat will get you better after sale cover than the Accord.
