Difference Between Dexamethasone and Prednisone

Dexamethasone and Prednisone

Prednisone and dexamethasone are both corticosteroids which have special purposes and actions. They may be similar in some of their functions but they surely are different. Dexamethasone that is taken orally can lessen the need for supplemental medical intervention in comparison with oral prednisone. Dexamethasone is the generic name of the drug, and its brand name is Decadron. Prednisone is also the generic name of the other drug, and its brand name is Predsol. These two types of drugs are both synthetically made corticosteroids.

Dexamethasone is utilized for lessening the swelling in several diseases. A few examples involve systemic lupus disease, rheumatoid arthritis, acute gouty arthritis, ulcerative colitis, Chrohn’s disease, and psoriatic arthritis. Serious allergic reactions that do not respond to other pharmacological management s may as well respond to this drug, such as bronchial asthma, atopic dermatitis, and drug-triggered dermatitis. Long-term skin diseases managed with dexamethasone involve dermatitis, pemphigus, herpetiformis, severe forms of psoriasis, and serious seborrheic dermatitis. Long-term inflammatory and allergic conditions of the iris, uvea, optic nerves, and conjunctiva are as well managed using this drug.

On the other hand, prednisone is prominently effective for asthma patients. This drug is frequently prescribed for patients with status asthmaticus or even persistent asthma attacks. Prednisone is also proven to be effective in treating rheumatoid arthritis. It can prevent the discharge of certain substances inside the body which may trigger the immune response to create an inflammation. Nevertheless, this drug is also used to manage several other conditions like skin diseases and ulcerative colitis.

Dexamethasone can augment or lessen the upshot of blood thinners, such as Coumadin. Blood coagulation must be monitored closely, and the blood thinner desired dose must also be regulated to achieve the expected levels of blood thinning for individuals taking blood thinners who commenced taking dexamethasone. Various drugs may interact with prednisone. The individual must tell the physician if he is using aspirin, diuretics, Warfarin, Cyclosporine, insulin or oral hyperglycemic agents, Nizoral, Rifampicin, and Phenytoin.

A patient must not use any of these two drugs if he is allergic to either of these, or if he has a fungal infection on any part of his body. Before taking any of these corticosteroids, you must tell your physician about your diseases and about all other drugs you are taking. There are several diseases that may be altered by the use of these drugs. The dosage of these drugs needs to be altered if you are under irregular stress, such as a severe disease, infection, or fever. These medications can weaken the immune system of the body which makes it easier for an individual to have the infection or make your condition even worse. You have to avoid people who have an infection or are sick. A person must not have a live-attenuated vaccination while using any of these two drugs because it will not be as effective as it should be and may rather cause the infection instead of giving you immunity. Before taking these drugs, a patient should have a full stomach because they might cause stomach upset.
