Difference Between Stitching and Sewing

Stitching vs Sewing

Craftsmanship is one of the oldest industries of the world. It has been practiced since man learned to create products using his hands and artistic powers. It involves the acquisition of great skills which can only be accomplished through experience and several years of study and practice.

Learning a craft necessitates interest and the drive to learn. Successful craftsmen often study and learn their crafts while they are still young usually under the supervision of older and experienced craftsmen.

Today, many people are striving to learn a craft and be able to master and be skilled in a particular field. It involves the use of natural resources such as; wood, clay, glass, metal, and textiles to produce artistic and functional products.
It is both a science and an art, examples of which are: pottery, metal work, glass blowing and art, and weaving and sewing. Sewing is the craft of joining and attaching objects together with stitches made with a needle and thread.
The practice of sewing has been used since the Paleolithic Era, and ancient people sewed fur and skin clothing by using bones, antlers, and ivory as needles and threads made from sinew, catgut, and the veins of animals.
It is most commonly used for clothing, but it is also being used in the manufacture of shoes, upholstery, sails, bookbinding, and sporting goods. It is the foundation of embroidery, tapestry, quilting, appliqué, and patchwork. It has the following types:

Plain sewing – which is the making and mending of clothes and linens.
Fancy sewing – which uses decorative techniques such as shirring, smocking, embroidery.
Heirloom sewing – which combines fine hand sewing and fancywork using a sewing machine and trimmings.

Sewing was done by hand until the sewing machine was invented in the 19th century. It has two components: seams and stitches. Seams are rows of stitches which fasten two objects together.
Stitches are the results of the process of stitching which is the looping or turning of thread or yarn. Stitching is a fundamental element of sewing, knitting, embroidery, crochet, and other needlework. It can be made by hand or by machine, and there are seven basic stitches:

Running stitch
Backstitch
Overcast stitch
Cross stitch
Buttonhole or blanket stitch
Chain stitch
Knot stitch

In knitting, stitching is done using a single loop of yarn. Loops are secured to each other to form rows called wales. In crocheting, stitching is done by pulling a loop of thread with a crochet hook.
