Tea Party vs John Birch Society

The Tea Party and the John Birch Society are considered to be the same with some similar ideologies and functions.

An American right-wing political group, the John Birch Society was an organization that was against communism and which advocated personal freedom, a Constitutional republic, and limited government. Robert W. Welch is known as the founder of this organization. Established in 1958, the John Birch Society was first based in Belmont, Massachusetts. Now the John Birch Society runs from its headquarters at Grand Chute, Wisconsin. The organization also has local chapters in all the states.

Besides being anti-communist, the John Birch Society is anti-socialist and anti-totalitarian. The group also opposes fascism, economic interventionism, and wealth redistribution. Their mission is “to bring about less government, more responsibility, and — with God’s help — a better world by providing leadership, education, and organized volunteer action in accordance with moral and Constitutional principles.”

The Tea Party was formed in the 21st century especially during the time of the 2008 United States Presidential elections. An exact date of its formation cannot be said as the organization was developed from a series of smaller organizations. However, the name “Tea Party” has been taken from the famous “Boston tea Party.” Though the local organizations of the Tea Party function independently, all have the same principles.
The Tea Party is a group that believes in fiscal responsibility. They believe that increasing national debt and government overspending posed a threat. They believe in a Constitutionally limited government that does not intervene in a state’s rights. The party also does not entertain free market intervention.
When compared to the John Birch Society, the Tea Party is more a grass-roots level organization. While the John Birch Society has national leaders, the Tea Party does not have any national leader.
