Kickboxing and karate are different physical disciplines. Though there are several similarities and parallels between kickboxing and karate, they have many differences between them.

Though karate is considered to be a martial art, it is also now considered a sports event. On the other hand, kickboxing is considered just a sports event and not as a major martial art.

Karate was first to have originated. It originated hundreds of years ago as a martial art form in Okinawa. The origins of karate basically lie in spiritual practice. It got wide popularity during the 19th century, and in the 20th century it was one of the most widely practiced martial art forms in the world.

In karate, “kata” or “postures” are very much used. People concentrate on their punches and kicks in karate. In this martial art form, importance is given to both physical as well as mental discipline. They actually go hand in hand.

kickboxing has integrated kicks from martial arts like karate and also boxing. Kicking and boxing adds to kickboxing. Unlike karate, there is no spiritual or mental element involved with kickboxing. This sports event has emerged from the 1950s.

In karate, the open hand is used for various punches. On the contrary, gloves as for boxers are used in kickboxing. Kicking, punching, elbow and knee strikes, throws, locks, and grappling are some of the techniques that are used.

It is easier to learn kickboxing than karate as this martial art just teaches the art of punching and kicking. But learning karate is a bit harder, and it becomes harder when learning advanced techniques.

The kickboxers use a loose top and shorts. The dress worn for karate is called “gi,” which is different for different styles. This wraparound dress is held together by small knots in the inside and secured around with a karate belt around the waist.
