Difference Between Hemp and Jute

Natural fibres are one of the raw materials in the manufacturer of bags, rope and rugs globally. Among the most common natural sources of fibre include jute, hemp and cotton. The durability and sustainability of natural fibres are incomparable to the use of other materials such as plastic. While hemp and jute are great sources of fabrics, they have differences in terms of sustainability and quality.

What is Hemp?

Also known as industrial hemp, this is a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant. It is commonly found in the Northern hemisphere and is widely known for its industrial uses. It is also among plants with a short growth lifespan not forgetting among the initial plants to be used in making usable fiber. Hemp can be used to make textiles, biodegradable plastics, biofuel, animal feed, paper, clothing, food, insulation and paint, just to mention a few. Since hemp is a strain of the Cannabis sativa plant, it contains tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is a psychoactive component. The component, however, is distinct with unique phytochemical uses and compositions. Hemp has fewer psychoactive effects due to the lower THC concentration and higher cannabidiol concentration.

What is Jute?

This is a fiber that is derived from plants in the Corchorus genus. Jute is a shiny, soft and long vegetable fiber. As such, it makes strong and coarse threads that are used in the manufacture of hessian, burlap or gunny cloth. It is also among the most affordable natural fibers. The fibers produced are composed of lignin and cellulose. Jute fibres are often 1-4 metres long and brown. Due to its high cash value and brown colour, it is also referred to as the golden fibre. And today, jute shopping bags and jute sacks are popular among customers and in the manufacturing industry.
