Difference Between Roomba and Dyson

Both Roomba and Dyson are two of the biggest names in the autonomous vacuum market. They are the most preferred choices when it comes to cleaning floors and taking care of the clutter around your house. Roomba is among the most popular consumer autonomous robots in existence and Dyson is known for its series of industry-best vacuum cleaners. We take a look at the robotic vacuum comparison between the Roomba and the Dyson, so you can decide for yourself which one’s best for you.

What is Roomba?

Roomba is a family of consumer autonomous robotic vacuum cleaners sold by the American technology company iRobot. Based out of Bedford, Massachusetts, iRobot is a leading consumer robot company that designs and builds innovative home robots. The company was founded by Rodney Brooks, the creator of Cog. Roomba is iRobot’s most successful model first introduced in 2002. Roomba is basically a small, battery-powered vacuum cleaner with no handle or bag. Dirt is blown into a dustbin that is conveniently placed behind the motor.

Roomba contains both infrared sensors and photocell sensors, both of which work combined to clean a room. The sensors tell it when it has started to go over a ledge, such as a stair. When one of these sensors is activated, Roomba stops and backs away. Other sensors respond to infrared transmitting units called virtual walls. These units act as invisible barriers that mark the limit of the space where the Roomba is supposed to clean. The same sensors alert the robot on when to stop.

What is Dyson?

Dyson is a Singaporean multinational technology company known for its eponymous brand of cord-free vacuum cleaners. Dyson vacuum cleaners are sold in over 65 countries all over the world. The company was founded by the brilliant and visionary James Dyson who invented the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner, which worked on the principle of cyclonic separation. It was first sold in Japan where it bagged the 1991 International Design Fair Prize and soon, it became a status symbol. It was quick to become a phenomenon and gained a worldwide attention.

After a few years, Dyson started his own company, Dyson Ltd. In 1993, he started his own research center in the Cotswolds where he set out to work on a new product – a new vacuum cleaner that would disrupt the vacuum cleaner market. He invented the DC01 (DC stands for “Dual Cyclone”) and it was the first vacuum cleaner to maintain 100% of suction all the time. Today, Dyson is engineering the future, harboring a team of over 1,000 hardworking engineers worldwide. Apart from vacuum cleaners, Dyson also makes air purifiers, humidifiers, hair dryers, hair stylers, and more.

Difference between Roomba and Dyson

Origin

 – Roomba is sold by the American technology company iRobot and first introduced to the market in 2002. At that time, it was 13.4 inches in diameter and 3.5 inches in height. iRobot is a leading consumer robot company founded in 1991 by Rodney Brooks, Helen Geiner, and Colin Angle for the purpose of building robots that can do all sorts of things. Dyson vacuum cleaners are sold in over 65 countries all over the world. The company was founded by James Dyson who invented the world’s first bagless vacuum cleaner. Dyson cleaners were first sold in the United States in 2002.

Products

 – Both are two of the biggest names in the autonomous vacuum market. However, iRobot’s main focus is on making cordless autonomous vacuums, while Dyson designs and dells vacuum cleaners across multiple categories. Dyson sells a wide range of vacuum cleaners, from handheld vacuums to uprights vacuums, stick vacuums, robotic vacuums, and wall-mounted vacuums. Apart from vacuum cleaners, Dyson sells other consumer products such as hair dryers, air purifiers, humidifiers, hair stylers, etc.

Technology

– Roomba uses the iAdapt Cleaning and Navigation Technology that utilizes a responsive algorithm to navigate the cleaning area. It uses over 40 robotic behaviors and makes more than 60 decisions per second to make sure it vacuums every section of the room it is supposed to clean. The anti-tangle technology keeps it from getting stuck on carpet fringe and cords. Dyson uses cyclonic separation technology to remove allergens, dust and other particles from the air. This technology optimizes the vacuum’s suction to prevent dust from getting back into the room.

Roomba vs. Dyson: Comparison Chart

Summary

While both are two of the biggest names in the autonomous vacuum cleaner market with some of the great vacuuming machines in their product catalog, Roomba is relatively cheaper than the Dyson’s machines. Both Roomba and Dyson focus on some specific features. Roomba is one of the most popular consumer autonomous robots in existence and Dyson is known for its series of industry-best vacuum cleaners. Does not matter which one you choose, you get the best for your house cleaning endeavors.

Is there something better than Roomba?

There are some better Roomba alternatives that deliver the same powerful cleaning and suction for a much better pricing range, such as the eufy 11S RoboVac, Ecavacs, DEEBOT 500, Coredy R500, and more.

What vacuum cleaners are better than Dyson?

Some of the best Dyson vacuum alternatives are Tineco A11 Hero, Eureka WhirlWind, Shark Upright Vacuum, etc.

Can a Roomba replace a vacuum?

While autonomous robot vacuum cleaners like Roomba are becoming a phenomenon, they will not replace a regular household vacuum cleaner completely. Roombas are good, but they aren’t that good to get a regular thorough clean and for mopping.

Is a Roomba better than a vacuum?

Roomba definitely does a great job when it comes to cleaning your rooms, but no Roomba can actually replace a hand-operated vacuum cleaner and mop. You’ll probably need a separate robot for mopping.

Are Roombas quiet?

All the Roombas basically use the same motors and suction, so the noise level depends on the surface where it is vacuuming. A typical Roomba max out at an impressively low 70 db.

Is it worth it to get a Roomba?

You can consider a Roomba as an additional cleaning machine on top of your regular vacuum cleaner and mop. Roomba cannot actually replace your regular vacuum cleaner, unless it can go up and down stairs and somehow clean them.
