Difference Between Alcoholics and Problem Drinkers

Alcoholics and Problem Drinkers

Is there any difference between alcoholics and problem drinkers? Some see that there are no exact differences between the two but the truth is that one can make out a distinction.

Alcoholics is a general term that is mainly used to describe when a person losses control over his drinking habit. On the other hand, ‘problem drinkers’ is a term that describes persons who take top drink because of certain situations.

An alcoholic may never accept the fact that he has drinking problem. An alcoholic will also not do anything to stop his habit even if he comes across emotional, physical and mental problems. An alcoholic has an imbalance life and shows extreme behaviours and also show mood changes quite often. An alcoholic will always have a pessimistic attitude towards everything.

Unlike an alcoholic, a problem drinker can stop his drinking habit anytime. There are several instances when a problem drinker stops drinking. In case a doctor advises him against consuming alcohol or if his spouse or any close relation threatens to leave him, then there is a possibility that the problem drinker stops consuming alcohol.

An alcoholic will never listen a doctor’s advice whereas a problem drinker abides with a doctor’s advice. Most of the alcoholics are just flying birds and they do not seek any one’s help or advice for any mater. The alcoholics may even choose a bottle of alcohol over the spouse whereas a problem drinker is always afraid of the spouse.

An alcoholic has no botheration of life or future. For him, the world is just alcohol. On the other hand, a problem drinker has certain concepts of the future and that is why he stops the habit after proper advice.

While problem drinkers can correct themselves, alcoholics find it difficult.
