American vs English Cocker Spaniel

American and English Cocker Spaniels are small spaniels, which have similar origins. Well, American Cocker Spaniel is considered to be more glamorous of the two spaniels.

It was in 1892 that the cocker spaniels were recognized as a dog breed in England. And the American Cocker Spaniel breed was developed out of English cocker spaniels.

When comparing American and English Ccker Spaniel, the English breed is larger than the American breed. When comparing the shapes of the two spaniel breeds, one can come across significant difference in the shape of their heads. While the American Cocker Spaniels have round heads, the English Cocker Spaniel has somewhat a rectangular shaped head.

The American Cocker Spaniel’s muzzle is a little shorter than the English Cocker Spaniel’s. When comparing the eyes, the American Cocker Spaniel’s eyes are slightly wider and projected forward than the English Cocker spaniel’s. The lips of an American Cocker Spaniel hang down more than the English Cocker Spaniel.

Coming to the coat, the American spaniel has very long and lustrous coat. On the other hand, the English Cocker spaniel has a thick coat, which are shorter than the American breed.

Both the  Cocker Spaniel breeds have almost similar temperament. The English Cocker Spaniel and the American Cocker Spaniel are very sensitive, playful, and lovable breeds. But the only difference that can be seen between the two is that English Cocker Spaniel has more hunting instinct than the American Cocker Spaniel.

The English Cocker Spaniel has a longer life span than the American Cocker Spaniel. When the American Cocker Spaniel has a life span of about 11 years, the English Cocker Spaniel has a life span of about 15 years.
