Tea in general comes originally in different variations made from one common plant, Camellia Sinesis that such drink existed since the imperial times of the orient. Usually, teas are associated with Asian countries like China, Japan, South Korea and some in the Middle East. The teas are believed to have invigorating powers and soothe the senses on meditation or relaxing after a hard day’s work. From Camellia Sinesis, there are four distinct type of teas namely; oolong, green, white, and black. The common difference of each type from one another is the oxidation level, which means that the more you boil the tea leaves with water, the more oxidized it becomes. Additionally, the more time that the tea is boiled, the more nutrients are extracted from the leaf to the water.
The Oolong tea is rated somewhere between the range of green and black tea, it’s oxidation starts from around 10% to 70%. In ancient times the Chinese called oolong, the black dragon tea because of it’s long, curly and dark appearance. The white tea, comes from the younger leaves of the Camellia Sinesis plant which is widely cultivated in the Fujan province of China. White teas of all four variations from Camellia Sinesis plant is the least oxidized, after it is harvested, it is allowed to dry under the natural sunlight to minimize oxidation and fermentation, it is this process that makes the tea appear white in color. Additionally, white tea contains the least amount of caffeine from all four varieties which amounts 18-20mg of caffeine per cup.
The green tea is another product made from Camellia Sinesis plant, just like 1 step less from the hardness of black tea. Green tea from it’s name appears green is oxidized slightly but does not go through a fermentation process. It is rich in anti-oxidants and compounds which duly increase the metabolism of fat at around 17% to 19% without duly increasing the heart rate. Minerals obtainable from this kind of tea induce thermogenesis. In caffeine content, green tea contains 30-35mg per cup.
The most popular tea in the world, is the black tea, still originated from the Camellia Sinesis plant, black tea of all similar varieties undergoes oxidation and fermentation at higher rates, this is the reason why it’s appearance is black. Although discouraged by some because of it’s strong and bitter flavor, black tea is the healthiest tea but, black tea has it’s own refreshing version too, the iced tea which is made from black tea is one of the most popular refreshing drinks in America. By caffeine content, it has 240-250mg per cup. It is also believed to minimize gastric diseases, heart, liver, and nervous problems. Some studies suggested that the regular intake of black tea minimizes the occurrence of Parkinson’s disease.
