I respectfully disagree. They are one and the same. The Russians chose to call them cosmonauts, and the US chose to call them astronauts. That’s all there is to it.

You have nothing better to worry about? Do you know the difference between sobaka and dog? Google it. It will set you free. Till then, use the word spaceman and all wars will disappear.

Blah blah blah, astronaut and cosmonaut are not essential the same thing, they are the same thing. Two competing countries did not agree an the same word, and have slightly different requirements and qualifications. And not being called an astronaut if you did not get some sort of training is is just a way to restrict the membership into a special club. If you go into space outside the atmosphere you should automatically get the title.

So a passenger with no training whatsoever on a space vessel should get the Title of Astronaut?

    Cosmos a Russian word? Really?
Both the words Astronaut and Cosmonaut are derived from Greek words.
